In occupational therapy, observations are crucial for assessing a child’s functional abilities, challenges, and goals. They involve carefully tuning into and analysing a child’’s performance during various activities of daily living to identify areas of strength and improvement.

Observations can be conducted at school, chidcare and kinder to observe a child’s participation in classroom activities, playground experiences and peer interactions. They can also be conduced at our clinc.

Observations can provide valuable insights into a child’s:

  • Physical abilities – range of motion, strength, coordination, and endurance.
  • Cognitive abilities – memory, attention, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Sensory abilities – vision, hearing, touch, smell, and taste.
  • Social and emotional skills – communication, interaction, and emotional regulation.
  • Functional limitations – difficulties with activities of daily living, participation in work or school, or leisure activities.

We will use observations to:

  • Identify areas of need to determine where a student or teacher requires support or intervention.
  • Set goals to establish realistic and achievable goals for the students and teachers.
  • Develop treatment plans – create individualised treatment plans that address the teacher and student’s identified needs.
  • Measure progress – monitor progress toward achieving their goals.
  • Adjust treatment plans – modify the treatment plan based on the client’s progress and changing needs.
