Goal Setting and Strategies to Support Goal Progress

“Children do well when they can” Dr Ross Greene

Goal setting is a core component of occupational therapy practice. It supports students’ enhancement of participation and engagement in all aspects of their education.

By establishing collaborative goals that are clear, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART), OTs help students focus their efforts, track progress, and maintain motivation throughout the process.

Goal Setting Process in Paediatric Occupational Therapy:

Collaborative Goal Setting
We work closely with students, educators and their families to establish meaningful, mutually agreed-upon goals that reflect the child’s needs and aspirations.

Regular Monitoring and Evaluation
We consistently review each goal, making necessary adjustments to the learning support plan.

Problem-Solving and Support
We assist the student and their team in identifying and overcoming barriers to goal achievement, offering tailored support and strategies to help them succeed.

Skill Acquisition and Practice
When goals target certain developmental areas (e.g., handwriting, gross motor skills), we can facilitate the development and practice of the skills necessary for achieving the goal, ensuring that tasks are graded and adjustments are made to the child’s current level.

Environmental Modifications and Assistive Technology
We may recommend modifications and adjustments to the environment or the use of assistive devices to support students with their goals.

By following this structured process, we effectively guide clients towards achieving their desired outcomes, ultimately enhancing their quality of life.
